It was brief, but it was significant. For a brief moment, humanity shone through and enemies could see each other as humans, like them. Measures were taken to prevent it from happening again, but for this short time, hope and humanity won out!

The Queen's Christmas message has become a staple in the Christmas Day schedule. It began via a "wireless" address to the Empire by a nervous George V, in 1932. 25 years later, his granddaughter, Elizabeth II did the first televised Christmas Day message!

Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' is first published on 19th Dec 1843, and never goes out of print! It is a tale of human morality against the backdrop of Christmas. Does it reflect Christmas traditions already established or informs them? Either way, Dickens' image of Christmas endures.

Lesley Smith has been the Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire since 2000. Lesley is well known for her highly entertaining and informative costumed portrayals of a variety of historical characters. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Lesley’s portrayals of Mary, Queen of Scots at Tutbury Castle as part of my 2019 Executed Queens tour and in January 2020 I was at Peterborough Cathedral for her first performance of Katherine of Aragon. I think what Lesley does is completely unique. Her portrayal of women in history, dressed as they would have been, is not a reenactment, rather she brings these women to life through her monologues and it’s as if they are standing there talking to you. Lesley kindly agreed to join me and answer questions about the women she portrays and how she prepares her characters.

In this episode, I talked about the importance of wider context in understandng historical events with specific reference to the failed marriage of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves, I explain what James V of Scotland was referring to when he exclaimed “It came wi’ a lass, and it shall pass wi' a lass" on hearing, on his deathbed, about the birth of his baby girl, Mary.
Plus lots more!

On 10th December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated, the first and only king in British history to do so willingly. In our line of monarchs, Edward VIII is the only one to have turned his back on the Crown and the position of Head of the Church in England. Could he actually have also been turning his back on the country?
